THE FOUNDING OF CUBAN CULTURAL HERITAGE

In the early 1980s, the Cuban Revolution was observing over twenty years in power, and the cities and towns in Cuba were starting to show a great neglect in upkeep and abandonment. Specifically, in centenary cities like Havana, buildings were starting to crumble, the dirt was unimaginable, and the deterioration of the infrastructure was accelerating. This caused great alarm and worry among a group of architects and other concerned exiles, and they began meeting, to discuss this potential catastrophe.
On January 12, 1994, Dr. Alberto Sánchez de Bustamante together with a group of 20 Cuban exiled professionals, that included among others Nicolás Quintana, Guillermo de Zéndegui, Eugenio Albarrán, Luis Botifoll, Hilario Candela, Diego Suárez, and Fernando G. Chacón, founded the non-profit, cultural organization Cuban Cultural Heritage, in Miami. The purpose of this organization was to pursue the conservation of Cuban culture and history in exile, and to study methods for preservation and re-urbanization, to be implemented in a future free country, to recover the architectural treasures that were being destroyed.
